Maybe postgame handshakes aren’t such a good idea after all.

As expected, Reseda High’s Alonzo Arreola was suspended for the remainder of the season Friday for punching Chatsworth’s Bryan LaCour in the stomach as the teams shook hands after a West Valley League baseball game Thursday.

Meanwhile, Jeff LaCour, whose son was not hurt in the incident, said he has dismissed the idea of filing charges against Arreola.

“It’s over and done with,†LaCour said. “The Chatsworth administration told me he would be suspended for the rest of the year. I’m satisfied with that.â€

The incident occurred just a few weeks after the debate over the exchange of postgame pleasantries made national headlines.

In March, a vote by Marmonte League administrators banned postgame handshakes because of the tendency for tempers to flare between players.

However, the ban was rescinded a few weeks later after coaches and administrators were bombarded with inquiries and criticism from media throughout the nation.

On Thursday, emotion ran high during Chatsworth’s 7-2 victory. Moments after the final out, Arreola, a senior third baseman, caught LaCour by surprise.

“I suspended him on the bus on the way home,†Reseda Coach Mike Stone said. “I talked to the whole team about it, including Alonzo. I made the decision before I talked to anyone at the school. I told the administration this morning what the decision was and they went along with it.â€

Stone said his players were the target of barbs from the Chatsworth bench throughout the game. Stone also said LaCour stepped on Arreola’s toes when the players met at third base.

Immediately after the incident, LaCour’s father said he would consider filing assault charges against Arreola.
