COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal State Fullerton Rallies to Defeat New Mexico State
Jeff Ferguson and Bret Hemphill each had four hits and a home run as Cal State Fullerton rallied to defeat New Mexico State, 15-11, in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday at Las Cruces, N.M.
Mark Kotsay and Jack Jones also homered for the Titans (37-10, 13-5), who won despite another poor pitching performance by No. 1 starter Mike Parisi.
Parisi gave up nine runs, eight earned, in 4 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out six. Parisi gave up five runs in 3 1/3 innings in his last start, against Nevada.
Dan Ricabal (7-0) pitched three innings of two-hit ball to earn the victory. Ricabal is coming off consecutive shutouts against Nevada Las Vegas and Nevada.
Fullerton scored four runs in the seventh to break open an 11-11 game. Dante Powell scored three runs and stole a base.
Jorge Martinez hit two homers for New Mexico State (19-28, 2-14). The teams play again today at noon PDT.
In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:
Concordia 8-2, Westmont 2-5--Jake Miller pitched a four-hitter, striking out two, and Chris Kindreich and Doug Senne had three hits and two runs scored apiece for Concordia in the opener.
Senne also had four RBIs for the Eagles, who finished their season 18-26-1, 7-12 in conference play.
In the National Christian College Athletic Assn. softball tournament:
Pacific Christian 1, Lee College (Tenn.) 0--Rhonda Staton scored the winning run on Jennifer Carter’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. Greta Carlson struck out 15 on her way to a five-hit shutout for Pacific Christian (20-18). At the plate Carlson went three for three. Pacific Christian advanced to the semifinal game against Mount Vernon Nazarene College of Ohio at 10 a.m. today.
In the NAIA District 3 softball playoffs:
Cal Baptist 1, Southern California Christian 0; Southern California College 3, Azusa Pacific 1--Beth Howard struck out five batters in SCC’s losing effort. In the earlier game, all three of its runs were unearned.
SCC, 1-1 in double elimination, must win both of its games today to win the District 3 Championships. SCC hosts Cal Baptist at 1 p.m.
