More than 1,000 people are expected to turn out today for “Paint Your Heart Out Anaheim,†an all-day project in which volunteers will paint 47 homes belonging to elderly and disabled people in the city.

Since 1990, more than 100 homes have been refurbished through the program. Materials and labor are donated by local businesses and community members and volunteers, while the city partially sponsors the event as well.

The volunteers are expected to use about 1,500 gallons to repaint the homes. Homeowners who are physically or financially unable to perform or pay for the improvements are eligible for the program.

In addition to painting, volunteer crews also install water and energy saving devices, repair driveways and haul away tons of yard debris.

“Every year, we’re able to offer more services to these homeowners,†said Keith Olesen, co-chairman of the event. “Thanks to the generous spirit of our donors and volunteers, the houses, neighborhoods and the city benefit. But most importantly, the homeowners know people still care.â€

Homeowners wishing to be placed on the waiting list for next year can call program coordinator Carolyn Griebe at (714) 974-9481.
