The Big West Conference will consider expanding beyond its current eight member schools, Commissioner Dennis Farrell said Sunday after a special meeting of athletic directors and chief executive officers.
“We will be looking into expansion, but we’ll only expand if we feel it will strengthen the conference,” Farrell said. “ . . . We’ll be contacting some schools to see what their interest might be in our conference.”
Farrell declined to identify the schools the conference will approach, but it is believed that Cal State Northridge is one.
Northridge has applied for membership into the Big West the past three years. Further discussion about expansion is expected to take place when conference officials meet again in two weeks.
