HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Boch’s Slam in the 8th Saves Rio Mesa, 6-5

Rio Mesa’s Charlie Boch, showing a flair for the dramatic, hit an opposite-field home run with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday to rally the host Spartans to a 6-5 victory in a Channel League game.

Boch, who has hit another grand slam this season for Rio Mesa (15-5, 8-2 in league play), sent a 3-and-2 pitch over the right-field fence off reliever Monty Moritz. Ventura (8-9, 6-4) had taken the lead in the top of the eighth when Bubba Morales tripled in two runs, then scored on a single by Jeremy Pierce.

Palmdale 18, Highland 2--Jerome Payton went five for five with five RBIs and three stolen bases as Palmdale improved to 14-5, 7-3 in Golden League play.

Hart 5, Canyon 4--Mike Espy slugged a three-run home run in the sixth inning to erase a two-run deficit and carry Foothill League-leading Hart past host Canyon. Espy accounted for all of Hart’s runs, also hitting a two-run homer in the second. Luis Sanchez (5-1), who had two hits, scattered six hits and struck out eight.

Channel Islands 9, Agoura 1--Javier Rios had three hits and three runs batted in, and Nacho Godinez (2-1) allowed five hits in a complete-game performance for Channel Islands (12-7, 6-4) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.

Calabasas 12, Santa Paula 3--Tanner Trosper homered and doubled and drove in three runs and scored three times for host Calabasas in a Frontier League game. Josh Morton (7-1) allowed four hits over five innings, striking out five, to get the victory for the Coyotes (14-3, 6-2), who benefited from five walks, five Cardinal errors and two hit batsmen.

Camarillo 6, Thousand Oaks 2--Scott Bolan had a two-run single during a four-run fourth inning, breaking up what had been a 2-1 Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Nathan Kaup (3-1) pitched a three-hitter and drove in two runs for Camarillo (10-9, 5-4).

Royal 14, Westlake 4--Maki Kramer had two hits, including a three-run homer, and drove in five runs for Royal in a Marmonte League game at Westlake. Joel Mellinger had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs for Royal (13-7, 6-4).

Hoover 10, Glendale 7--Steve Staub (3-1) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings of relief as visiting Hoover (10-7, 8-3) won the Pacific League game. Amador Solis went four for four with two RBIs and Alan Lau had two hits and four RBIs.

Moorpark 8, Nordhoff 1--Jason Adamson had two hits, stole two bases and scored two runs to lead the Musketeers in a Frontier League game. Brian Garretson (7-0) allowed only one run and six hits for Moorpark (16-3, 8-0).

Village Christian 5, Western Christian 0--Senior right-hander Ryan Orefice pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout for visiting Village Christian (13-6, 4-4), striking out seven.

St. Bonaventure 9, Bishop Diego 4--Identical twins Danny and Donny Harrison each had two hits to lead visiting St. Bonaventure (11-7, 6-3) in the Tri-Valley League game. Jon Barrios, Brian Elmerick and John Ghereni each had two hits for Bishop Diego (7-11, 4-5).

Faith Baptist 10, Campbell Hall 6--Sophomore shortstop Jay Carpenter went four for five with two triples and two RBIs and teammate Martin Khodaverdian had two hits and three RBIs to lead a 14-hit attack for visiting Faith Baptist (8-8, 4-2) in a Delphic League game.

Oak Park 6, Fillmore 2--Three Oak Park pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the visiting Eagles won the Tri-Valley League game. With Oak Park down, 2-1, with two out in the sixth and runners on second and third, Robbie Sherwin came through with a single that drove in two and gave Oak Park (10-4-1, 5-3) the lead for good.

L.A. Baptist 6, Marshall 0--Matt Hernandez struck out nine and walked none in picking up his seventh victory, and hit two doubles and scored two runs for visiting L.A. Baptist (14-5, 5-1).

Poly 10, Grant 1--Parrot pitcher Hugo DeLaTorre threw a three-hitter in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly (17-2, 9-1).

DeLaTorre (8-0) had four strikeouts and walked three. Teammate Luciano Cuevas went three for four and drove in one run, and Gowdy Martinez went two for three with three RBIs.

Verdugo Hills 9, Eagle Rock 7--Center fielder Greg Martin hit a grand slam in the second inning to lead the Dons in a Northeastern League game. James Flores homered in the first inning for Verdugo Hills (7-8, 6-4).

Monroe 6, Van Nuys 5--Wayne Nix singled home Mike Perez with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Vikings (7-8, 6-4) in a Mid-Valley League game. Aro Atolikian had two hits for Van Nuys (7-14, 3-7).

Chatsworth 12, Taft 1--Oscar Bocanegra (1-0) threw a three-hitter as Chatsworth defeated the Toreadors for the second day in a row in a West Valley League game at Chatsworth (19-3, 2-0).

Danny Phillips went two for four with two doubles, three runs and three RBIs for the Chancellors. Teammate Brandon Murphy also doubled twice and drove in two runs.

SOFTBALL

Saugus 5, Hart 0--Jamie Gillies won her 10th consecutive game by pitching a five-hitter in a Foothill league game at Saugus (21-2, 8-0). Gillies (18-2) had six strikeouts. Teammate Jill Passafiume went two for three and scored three runs.

Royal 1, Camarillo 0--Jamie Carter walked, moved to second on a passed ball, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Kim Whitehead’s single with two out in the bottom of the seventh of a Marmonte League game at Royal. Whitehead’s blow was the lone hit off Melanie Richardson (11-4), who struck out eight.

Oakwood 20, Providence 7--Mandy Fox had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, and Laura Alexander added a double and three RBIs for Liberty League-leading Oakwood (9-2, 5-0).

Harvard-Westlake 9, St. Bernard 8--Tiffany Zwicker’s seventh-inning single drove in Heather Kinlaw and Tracy Balton with the tying and winning runs as Harvard rallied for four runs in the final inning of a Mission League game at Valley College. Zwicker and Balton each had two hits for Harvard (6-6, 1-6).

Moorpark 7, Nordhoff 0--Junior Mindy Penrod (9-2) pitched her second no-hitter of the season and hit a two-run home run to pace the Musketeers (12-3, 7-0) in the Frontier League game. Penrod struck out 12 and walked none.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Chatsworth 19 1/2, Birmingham 10--James Oh lost only three games in four sets to lead the Chancellors (9-3) in the first round of the City Section 4-A playoffs.

BOYS’ TRACK

Kennedy 76, Granada Hills 46--Cougar sprinter Donte Scarbrough won the 100 meters (11.4), the 220 yards (23.2) and the long jump (21-5) and Kennedy won the Northwest Valley Conference championship. Kennedy and Granada Hills each finished with 6-1 records but the Golden Cougars took the title by virtue of the head-to-head victory.
