Whittier Christian’s 47-match winning streak ended when Calvary Chapel, ranked eighth in Orange County, defeated the host Heralds, 9-15, 15-13, 15-6, 15-9, in an Olympic League boys’ volleyball match Tuesday.
Philip Schildts had 24 kills and two blocks. His brother Robert had 14 kills and four blocks and Aaron Fountain had 12 kills for Calvary Chapel (9-0, 5-0 in league).
Tim Willey had 24 kills and six blocks for Whittier Christian (8-1, 4-1), a three-time defending Southern Section champion.
The Heralds fell two short of a Southern Section record for consecutive matches won. North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake won 49 consecutive matches from 1986-’89.
“The streak is over, but there is a bigger prize out there,” Whittier Christian Coach Dave Herron said. “We want to get back to the Southern Section finals.”
Calvary Chapel rallied from a 13-11 deficit to win Game 2 and draw even after losing Game 1. Setter Matt Wright had 54 assists as the Eagles improved their serving and passing to take control.
