contest pig: n. a person who enters lots of radio contests and ends up hogging prizes.
dead air: n. sudden, unexpected silence; a mistake that generally gets the DJ in big trouble.
EBS test: n. an annoying tone that creeps into a broadcast. From the Emergency Broadcast System.
hit the post: v. to speak during the opening notes of a song, stopping just before the singer begins.
liner cards: n . cue cards for promos or station IDs written by the program director. “I’d better get these liner cards to the booth; that dummy’ll botch the name of the special.”
on the beach: to be an unemployed disc jockey. “His ratings hit the skids and the next thing you know, he was on the beach. “
sales dogs: n. ad sales personnel. “Sorry I’m late. Had to meet with the sales dogs about the new sponsor.”
shaggy dog: n . someone who pretends to be a serious caller in order to gain the DJ’s trust and then shouts obscenities on a live broadcast.
smoked: v . fired.
tight board: when the technical end of the show is run well. As in a tight ship.
