IRVINE — A 69-year-old woman confronted by a carjacker quickly disabled the ignition before abandoning the car to him, police said Saturday.
A teen-ager, armed with a handgun, approached the woman about 9 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Park West Apartments complex on the 3800 block of Parkview Lane and demanded her Chrysler New Yorker, police said.
The woman, whose name was not released, turned on a device that prevented the car’s ignition from working, Irvine Police Sgt. Jeff Kermode said. She ran from the car as the would-be carjacker tried to start it.
When it wouldn’t, he ran, too.
Evidence obtained at the scene led them to a 16-year-old who lives in Santa Ana.
The youth, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, was booked at Orange County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of carjacking, police said.
