*** Casual, “Fear Itself,” Jive. A dazzling debut by a 17-year-old rapper who’s part of the famed East Oakland crew Hieroglyphics, which includes Domino and Del tha Funky Homosapien--who both produced tracks here. Casual’s zippy, improvisational style is backed by nifty, jazzed-up funk beats. Though admirable when flashing a social conscience, Casual truly shines as a strutting merrymaker--indulging in spirited, old-school chest-thumping.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
