HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Highland Pays for Las Vegas Trip
Taking advantage of a depleted Highland squad that was playing without eight starters who had been suspended earlier in the day, Antelope Valley ripped the Bulldogs, 18-4, in a Golden League game Friday at Highland.
Coach Mike Van Cheri suspended 11 players for rules violations that occurred during the team’s recent trip to a tournament in Las Vegas.
Highland jumped to an early 4-0 lead, but the Antelopes responded with 18 consecutive runs. Joe Chavez, a sophomore shortstop and the only Highland starter not suspended, had two hits and two runs batted in.
Camarillo 8, Thousand Oaks 6--Nathan Kaup, who was three for four, keyed a four-run seventh with a bases-loaded RBI single, leading the visiting Scorpions (5-7, 1-4 in league play) to their first Marmonte League victory. Kaup’s hit tied the score and Desi Sandlin drove in the go-ahead runs with a single.
Kaup, a sophomore infielder, made his third pitching appearance of the season, picked up his first victory. He did not allow an earned run in three innings of relief. Greg Aguilar led Thousand Oaks (9-5, 2-2) with three RBIs.
Simi Valley 4, Agoura 2--Freshman center fielder David Krewson, playing in his first varsity game, belted a home run and scored three runs to lead the Pioneers (10-2, 5-1) to a Marmonte League victory. Brian Wall added two hits and double.
Ventura 7, Buena 6--Chad Anderson drove in Seth Casey in the eighth as Ventura rallied from a five-run deficit in the Channel League game. Anderson had two hits and two RBIs while Casey added three hits.
Ventura scored five runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Newbury Park 10, Westlake 6--Catcher Jeff Bennett hit a three-run home run and a double in leading the Panthers (11-4, 4-0), the only unbeaten team in the Marmonte League. Ray Clinton (6-2) pitched a complete game for Newbury Park.
Channel Islands 22, Royal 8--Senior shortstop Johnny Oliveras was five for six with a grand slam and nine RBIs, leading the visiting Raiders (9-6, 3-2) in a Marmonte League game.
Javier Rios and James Rodriguez each had three hits for Channel Islands.
Adrian Mendoza and Joel Mellinger each had two hits for Royal (7-4, 3-2).
Harvard-Westlake 10-20, Brentwood 8-17--In the first game of a doubleheader, Dan Mason’s single with one out in the seventh inning scored David Tuizer from third base with the go-ahead run for Harvard-Westlake (10-6). Derek Lemkin was two for four and six RBIs for the Wolverines.
In the second game, Mason broke a 15-15 tie in the seventh with a two-out grand slam. Mason finished the game with eight RBIs. Andy Gatt added three hits and two runs. Brandon Mars was a combined six for nine for Brentwood (5-3) with six RBIs, including a first-inning grand slam in the second game.
Alemany 7, Santa Monica 4--Alex Peran was three for four with two triples and three RBIs for the Indians (10-6) in pool play of the San Luis Obispo tournament. Freddy Perez, Alemany’s regular bullpen stopper, made his first start and gave up two earned runs and scattered eight hits in pitching a complete game.
Hueneme 7, Bloomington 6--Helped by Art Bolen’s two-out double in the bottom of the seventh, Hueneme scored six runs to win its second game of the San Luis Obispo tournament.
Earlier, the Vikings defeated El Segundo, 3-0, as Robert Ralston had three hits.
Dos Pueblos 4, Rio Mesa 3--The host Spartans (9-5, 5-2) dropped a Channel League game and fell into a first-place tie with the Chargers (10-3, 5-2).
Chatsworth 4, Cleveland 2--Tony Montiel drove in four runs and was the winning pitcher in the eight-inning victory over host Cleveland in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
Chatsworth starter Oscar Bocanegra took a no-hitter into the seventh but a single by Chris Vasquez, an error and three walks allowed Cleveland to tie the game at 2-2. Montiel came on in relief and struck out Junior Brignac with the bases loaded.
San Fernando 5, Reseda 4--Jerry Rodriguez and Carlos Jimenez each had triples in a three-run fifth inning, leading the visiting Tigers (2-10, 1-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game. Javier Barragan pitched a complete game for San Fernando. Carlos Nunez was four for four with a double for Reseda (3-4-1, 1-3).
Granada Hills 9, El Camino Real 4--Jimmy Landress (two for four) and Sean Lavery (two for three, two runs and two RBIs) led host Granada Hills (7-2, 3-1) to a Northwest Valley Conference victory.
Down 8-3, El Camino Real (2-2 in league play) loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but reliever Josh Goldberg slammed the door by getting a forceout at the plate and a strikeout.
Taft 7, Kennedy 0--In a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft where both teams had four hits, Taft was the beneficiary of seven walks, four of which were converted into runs.
Jacob Young had half of Taft’s hits and drove in two runs. Junior right-hander Justin Collins (2-0) recorded the first shutout of the season for Taft (8-7, 3-1).
