PREP ROUNDUP : Hess’ Two Victories Help Canyon Beat Orange

Double-winner Lisa Hess took first in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle to help Canyon beat Orange, 100-70, in a girls’ Century League dual meet Wednesday at Orange High.

Hess’ time in the butterfly, 1:00.40, was the fastest time recorded this season and her 1:59.9 in the 200 freestyle put her in this year’s top five times in the county.

Canyon remains undefeated at 6-0, 2-0.

In Empire League girls’ swimming:

Los Alamitos 137, Loara 33--Adrienne Paradeise, Tatum Schubert and Joanna O’Kelley each won two events for Los Alamitos (5-0, 2-0). Paradeise won the 50 freestyle (25.66) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.86), Schubert won the 100 (55.64) and 200 freestyle (2:02.32 and O’Kelley won the 200 medley (2:16.32) and the 500 freestyle (5:25.58).

In Orange League girls’ swimming:

Savanna 75, Magnolia 75--Laura Marsh and Jodi Sanderson each won two events for Magnolia (2-3-1, 0-0-1).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ swimming:

Laguna Hills 95, Costa Mesa 60--Claudia Arellanes and Geanna Johnson each won two events for Laguna Hills (2-1 in league). Arellanes won the 200 freestyle (2:19.16) and the 100 butterfly (1:08.68), and Johnson won the 50 freestyle (25.24) and the 200 medley (2:21.65).

In Empire league boys’ swimming:

Cypress 87, Esperanza 83--Steve Fonda won the 50-yard event and also won the 500 in a time of 5:16.3 for Esperanza (2-1, 1-1).

Los Alamitos 132, Loara 38--Eric Ploeffell won the 100 freestyle (51.14) and 100 backstroke (59.40) for Los Alamitos.

In Pacific Coast League boys’ swimming:

Laguna Hills 102, Costa Mesa 60--Preston Hammontree and Mark Kwok each won two events for Laguna Hills (1-2 in league). Hammontree won the 200 (1:49.18) and 500 freestyle (4:53.84), and Kwok won the 100 freestyle (50.63) and the 200 medley (2:08.97).

In nonleague golf:

Brea-Olinda 408, Los Altos 438--Mike Peterson was the medalist, shooting a 74 at Imperial and Industry Hills for the Wildcats (7-3).

Costa Mesa 220, Orange 238--Andrew Zanzig was the medalist, shooting a 40 for Costa Mesa (5-4) at Los Lagos.

Sunny Hills 191, Cerritos 209--Terry Noe shot a two-under 34 for Sunny Hills (8-0) at Lakewood.

Valencia 398, Cerritos-Gahr 473--Chris Porter and Bruce Campbell each shot a 73 for Valencia (8-2) at Alta Vista.

In Sea View League softball:

Saddleback 1, Newport Harbor 0--Saddleback’s (1-2 in league) first-inning run proved to be enough for Linsey Buenida, as she shut out Newport Harbor (4-5, 0-3) on four hits.

Jenny Colclasure also allowed four hits for Newport Harbor in pitching a complete game.

In nonleague softball:

Valencia 7, Buena Park 2--Carrie Ritchey’s two-run home run in the fourth inning put Valencia ahead for good over host Buena Park (4-5).

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

Esperanza 3, El Dorado 1--Jason Klems had 16 kills to lead Esperanza (5-2, 1-0), 15-8, 15-1, 15-1, 13-15, in its league opener.

Los Alamitos 3, Cypress 0--Tim Thomas and John Griffin had 12 kills each to lead Los Alamitos (1-3, 1-0), 15-2, 16-14, 16-14.

Valencia 3, Western 0--Joe Reynoza had 20 kills to lead Valencia (5-3, 1-0) to a 15-10, 15-11, 15-11 victory at Western.

In Sunset league volleyball:

Ocean View 3, Santa Ana 0--Nate Morton had 13 kills for Ocean View (4-4, 3-3), 15-7, 15-6, 15-9.
