HUNTINGTON BEACH : Truck Spills Diesel Fuel Near Channel
A dump truck overturned at a construction site near Talbert Channel on Wednesday morning, spilling about 15 gallons of hydraulic fluid and diesel fuel onto a grassy area next to a wetland.
“It’s not much to be concerned about,†said Patrick Moore, a spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Game, which oversaw the cleanup. “Only traces of the oil went into the water and there was no loss of wildlife.â€
The accident--near Magnolia Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway--involved a truck owned by Lohrman Truck Inc. of the City of Industry. According to a Fire Department spokesman, the mishap occurred about 8:30 a.m. when the truck toppled because of an unevenly distributed load of rocks it was carrying.
“It was quite a mess,†said Steve Safford, a local construction worker who drove by a short time later. “The truck was on its side and the cab was crushed.â€
The driver of the truck--identified by the Fire Department spokesman as Robert Parra, 36--was not seriously injured.
According to Moore, the trucking company will be cited for violating a state law that makes it a misdemeanor to dump petroleum products in or near a waterway.
