The Kansas City Royals asked waivers on outfielder Chris Gwynn for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Gwynn, 29, was batting .229 with two doubles, two triples, one home run and seven RBIs in 14 spring training games.

First baseman Kevin Maas, who hit 21 home runs in three months in a record-setting rookie season for the New York Yankees in 1990, was released. Maas, 29, hit .205 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs in 151 at-bats last year for the Yankees.

The Florida Marlins shook up their bullpen, requesting waivers for the purpose of giving veteran left-handers Joe Klink and Rich Rodriguez their unconditional release. Both pitched last season for the Marlins, who will save about $1 million by the move. . . . The Atlanta Braves settled on their opening day roster, with rookie outfielder Mike Kelly edging out pitcher Mike Birkbeck and speedster Jarvis Brown for the final spot.
