ROUNDUP : Simi Valley Shown Way by Scheffels

Simi Valley High right-hander Bill Scheffels pitched a three-hitter, leading the Pioneers to a 4-3 Marmonte League victory over Camarillo Tuesday at Simi Valley.

Scheffels (4-0), a senior, struck out seven. He also was two for three with a run batted in for the Pioneers (7-1, 3-0), The Times’ top-ranked team in the region.

Simi Valley second baseman Tim Nykoluk added three hits.

Channel Islands 5, Agoura 0--Kenny Long pitched a two-hitter and Josh Babauta had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run in the Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.

Long (4-0), a right-handed junior, struck out three and walked three for the Raiders (7-6, 1-2).

Westlake 3, Las Vegas 1; Westlake 8, Valley (Las Vegas) 5--The Warriors turned a triple play in the fifth inning of the first game as Westlake won two pool play games in the Blazer Invitational.

Mike Hays led Westlake (7-3) with three hits and drove in two runs in the second game. Rick Davidson pitched a three-hitter in the first game, striking out six and walking three.

Thousand Oaks 8, Birmingham 3--Jay Wolfe and Greg Aguilar combined on a four-hitter and Eric Soliz had two hits and drove in three runs for Thousand Oaks (9-2) in a pool-play game of its own tournament.

Birmingham 14, Santa Maria 1--Jamie Darneel took a no-hitter into the sixth inning to lead the Braves in a Thousand Oaks tournament game.

Moorpark 8, Santa Paula 2--Musketeer starter Mike Vasquez (4-1) had 10 strikeouts in a complete-game victory. Only one of Moorpark’s runs were earned.

Harvard-Westlake 6, San Fernando 4--Jon Schaeffer, who had three RBIs, tripled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of a pool-play game at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Hart 5, Saugus 3--A solo home run by Josh Weitzman and an RBI double by Brian Baron plus two Saugus errors highlighted a four-run fifth inning that lifted Hart starter Luis Sanchez to 3-1.

The Indians improved to 6-3, 2-0 in Foothill League play.

Crespi 10, Canyon 7--The Cowboys had a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but walked the first four Celt hitters and pinch-hitter Bret Niles hit a grand slam to give Crespi an 8-7 lead in a nonleague game.

Brad Farlow hit his second home run and had three RBIs for Crespi.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Oxnard 3, Mission 1--Ryan Glass struck out five and scattered six hits to lead Oxnard (9-12) in the first round of the Channel Coast tournament.

Andy Wilson had a run-scoring single and Jason Young had a sacrifice fly.

Southwestern 11, Pierce 8--The Apaches pelted Pierce with 14 hits, but Brian Basowski had three hits and two RBIs, and Cesar Martinez added two hits and three RBIs for the Brahmas in the Grossmont tournament.

Pierce 11, East L.A. 4--Kevin Milligan drove in five runs and Ricky Staves (2-0) picked up the victory in relief of a Grossmont tournament game.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Buena 86, Rio Mesa 73, Dos Pueblos 27--The Spartans, led by triple winner Andrea Wasden, won seven of 10 running events--including both relays--but Buena’s superior depth proved decisive in the Channel League meet at Rio Mesa.
