OUTLOOK

Only two starters are back from the Vaqueros’ first playoff team since 1987, so it could be a rebuilding year for Osterode, who lost six all-league players. Luce (.340, five home runs), a second-team all-leaguer who moves from second to shortstop, and Osterode (.350), who caught every inning last year, will be asked to carry Rancho, at least early on. “We’re real young,†Jeff Osterode said. “I can’t really wait for them to get better. They have to get better soon.†Like so many other teams in the league, the Vaqueros are without any proven pitchers. Kozak, who was the fourth or fifth pitcher last year, will be the ace. That role might have gone to Trigg, another lefty, but he is ineligible because of grades and will miss all but the final eight games. “It just broke my heart when I heard he couldn’t play,†Osterode said. Osterode is also excited about Cothrell, a 6-5, 200-pound center fielder.
