The Master’s College has been seeded first in the NAIA Far West Region Independents basketball tournament that starts Friday at Concordia University in Irvine.

Master’s (26-4) will play fourth-seeded Christian Heritage (8-23) in the second of two semifinals, at 8 p.m.

Damon Ridley of Cal Lutheran has been selected as the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year, and Kingsmen forwards Derrick Clark and Rupert Sapwell also have been named to the All-SCIAC first team.

Emeka Okenwa of The Master’s College and Coach Bill Oates have been named the NAIA Far West Region Independents player and coach of the year. Okenwa, a 6-7 senior center, is averaging 16.1 points and 9.1 rebounds.

James Mosley and Andy Thompson also were named to the all-region team.

The Southern Section girls’ Division I-A championship between Buena High and Mater Dei has been moved to Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Ventura College.

The Division IV-A championship between Village Christian and Cerritos Valley Christian has been moved from Friday to Saturday at 6:45 p.m. at Pomona, in place of the Buena-Mater Dei game.

Football

Hart High guard Marty Crowder, who with his blocking last fall helped three teammates get Division I football scholarships, was one of two Hart players who signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Northridge after being offered a small financial package by the school. The other was linebacker Shane Shafer.

Boxing

Super-flyweight Miguel Mercedes suffered what was believed to be a concussion, was removed from the Forum ring by stretcher and taken to Westside Hospital on Tuesday night for observation. Mercedes had lost to Cecilio Espino by technical knockout in the 10th round.

Miscellany

The 1994 Lillehammer Games were the most-watched Olympics in history, finishing 14% ahead of the record set by the 1972 Summer Games in Munich.

The average rating for CBS’s 16 nights of prime time coverage was 27.8, Nielsen Media Research said.

The Munich Games, interrupted when Palestinian terrorists killed 11 members of the Israeli team, got a 24.4 rating on ABC.
