Conference Planned on Gifted Students

Ventura County parents of gifted students who want tips on how to nurture their children’s intelligence will be able to attend a March 19 conference in Ventura.

And they can bring their children too.

In addition to featuring separate meetings for parents and teachers of gifted children, the conference, which is sponsored by state and local associations for the gifted, will include workshops for the students.

A workshop on how to prepare for college will be geared toward high school students, organizers said. A session on sign language may attract younger children. Other student workshops will include sessions on poetry writing, creativity and a talk by a sixth-grade entomologist from an Oxnard elementary school.

While students are attending these workshops, parents will be able to hear a talk by Barbara Clark, professor from Cal State Los Angeles who is a nationally known expert on the gifted, said Margaret Gosfield, a representative of the California Assn. for the Gifted who helped organize the conference.

The event will also feature a panel discussion for parents on how to support their gifted children, which will give families a chance to have questions answered by educators of the gifted.

The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Buena High School. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 per student.
