GIRLS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING ’94 / Six Teams to Watch : Capistrano Valley
- Share via
Coach: Don Cholodenko (first year).
1993: Fourth in the South Coast League; third at Division I championship meet.
Key returners: Summer Brown, Jr., diving; Cathy Carone, Jr.; Cassie Day, Jr., diving; Harmony French, Sr.; Tracey McCalley, Sr.; Shannon Pace, So.; Jeannine Povey, Jr.; Stephanie Stephens, So.
Key newcomers: Carly Cox, Fr.; Jessica Povey, Fr.
Outlook: Much is made of the Cougars’ diving corps--and it should be as it’s a Capistrano Valley tradition. Last year at the section meet, Brown, Day and graduates Jennifer Maxwell and Darcy Stuart took third through sixth for valuable team points. The addition of Pace gives the divers more strength. But the Cougars have the swimmers--last year’s youth movement is a year older--to make a legitimate title run. Returners from the championship 200-yard freestyle relay are Carone, McCalley and Povey. Only Kim Davis, a sprint freestyler who moved to Northern California, is gone. All three relay members were finalists in individual events. Carone is a top backstroker (seventh in 100) and butterflier (second in 100).
