BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING ’94 / Six Teams to Watch : Irvine

Coach: Ken Dory (seventh year).
1993: Sea View League champion; third at Division II championship meet.
Key returners: Steve Carrera, Jr.; Scott Gibson, Sr.; Jason Lezak, Sr.; Jeff Pack, Jr.; Steve Ronson, So.; Scott Trausch, Jr.
Key newcomers: Eric Chen, So.; Matt Clymer, So.; Garrett Greer, Fr.; Peter Hamilton, So.; Jeff Higley, Jr.; Bryce Tur, Fr.; Raymond Wong, Jr.
Outlook: Irvine probably won’t improve much from its dual-meet season from last year, but because of its depth, the Vaqueros should have a good league meet. The league title is a toss-up between Corona del Mar, Irvine and Woodbridge, but Dory believes Irvine’s deep bench will help give it the edge. “Woodbridge has two great guys, but when depth counts, we have four good guys,” he said. Lezak, a two-time All-American and top-four section finisher in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, and Ronson, the only freshman to score in two events at the championship meet (50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke), anchor the Vaqueros’ hopes.
