COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Women End Golden West Streak
Cypress ended Golden West’s 25-game Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball winning streak with a 79-75 victory in overtime Friday at Cypress.
Golden West, the second-ranked team in the State, last lost in conference to Saddleback in February, 1992.
Sara Works, a freshman forward, scored 26 points and had 17 rebounds for Cypress (20-8, 5-4 in conference), which had lost twice to Golden West this season.
Works scored Cypress’ first six overtime points, all on assists from Jennifer Johnson.
Golden West rallied to take the lead, 75-74, on a three-pointer by Kristin Brun with 2 minutes 30 seconds to play. The Chargers took it back, 76-75, on a jumper by Johnson with 1:53 left.
Stephanie Werdel gave Cypress a 78-75 lead with 1:37 left with a lay-in.
Golden West (26-4, 8-1) rallied from 14 points down with about six minutes to play to force overtime.
Deana Itow had a chance to give Golden West the lead with nine seconds left but missed a free throw that would have completed a three-point play.
Michelle Kravik scored 18 points for Golden West, which leads second-place Fullerton by 1 1/2 games.
In other Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball games:
Saddleback 89, Rancho Santiago 60--Bonnie Trejo scored a career-high 27 points and had 11 rebounds as the Gauchos (7-14, 2-7) stopped a five-game losing streak. Rancho Santiago (3-17, 0-9) has lost nine in a row.
Fullerton 60, Orange Coast 59 (OT)--Jocelyn Mackzum led Fullerton (18-11, 6-2) with 18 points and 13 rebounds at Fullerton. LeAnn Kazmer had 18 points and 14 rebounds for Orange Coast (17-10, 5-3).
In Orange Empire Conference basketball men’s games:
Saddleback 93, Rancho Santiago 79--Saddleback made 28 of 29 free throws in its eighth consecutive victory. The Gauchos (19-6, 9-1), hold a one-game lead over Riverside with four left.
Josh Borella (15 points) made 10 of 10 free throws, and Tes Whitlock (29) was nine for nine.
Sean Amos scored 22 for Rancho Santiago (18-9, 6-4).
Orange Coast 78, Fullerton 75--Derek Roche had 24 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Orange Coast (12-13, 2-8) to the upset, ending a seven-game conference losing streak. Tyrone Merriweather had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Fullerton (21-8, 6-4).
Cypress 85, Golden West 65--Jeff Cummins (22 points) made four of five three-point shots for visiting Cypress (12-17, 3-7). Golden West is 8-18, 1-9.
