Holy Bull, a 1-2 favorite, learned something in the education process of a 3-year-old and remained unbeaten with a three-quarter length victory Sunday over Patton in the Grade II Hutcheson Stakes for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream.

Holy Bull had never lost a lead until Sunday, but he rallied and drew even at the sixteenth pole, pulling away in the last 70 yards to win in 1:21 1/5 for the seven-furlong race that was diminished in stature when Dehere was scratched Saturday because of colic.

Jockey Mike Smith said he knew Holy Bull, who carried 122 pounds, nine more than Patton, could rally.

“I would have looked like a fool if it hadn’t worked, but when Patton went by us, it was just part of my plan,†Smith said. “What I didn’t want was to have to put him to a drive earlier than I did. This colt hadn’t run for three months.â€

Holy Bull, who has earned $388,760, paid $3, $2.40 and $2.10. Patton paid $2.80 and $2.20. You and I paid $2.20 to show in the five-horse field.
