LAKE TRAGEDY: To 10-year-old Ninoy Kiat of Panorama City, the ice-covered lake looked like a fun place to play. But he soon fell into the freezing water of Lake Jackson, near Wrightwood, prompting his mother to frantically run onto the thin ice after him. She, too, plunged into the water. . . . When it was all over, Ninoy was safe, but his mother, Analiza, was dead (B1).
OFF-ROAD DUSTUP: Motocross fans have their hearts set on an off-road vehicle park being built in rugged Baker and Hume canyons in Santa Clarita. But canyon homeowners are staunchly opposed, citing noise and traffic. . . . Opponents last week won a partial victory when county supervisors ruled Baker unsuitable for motocross. PARTY SHOOTING: A 17-year-old alleged gang member was shot in the head by a state prison officer during a gun battle at a late-night Pacoima party. Four other party-goers were wounded when several shots were fired. . . . Police said the prison officer, who was not identified, apparently acted in self-defense when he shot the teen, reported in critical condition. (B3).
