Ed Podivinsky became the first Canadian to win a World Cup downhill in nearly five years with a victory at Saalbach, Austria, as two sprints were used for only the second time in the competition’s history.

Podivinsky rallied from 18th after the first run to head a 1-2 finish with fellow Canadian Cary Mullen.

Podivinsky had an aggregate time of 2 minutes 9.83 seconds for two runs on an icy, fast course, beating Mullen--the first-run leader--by .38 seconds.

Sweden’s Pernilla Wiberg won her second World Cup slalom of the season at Morzine, France, in 1:49.39.

Julie Parisien of Auburn, Me., had the 10th-best time in the first run but missed a gate in the second run and was disqualified.
