Children Solicit Funds for Parents’ Funeral
HIALEAH, Fla. — Four children who were orphaned in an apparent New Year’s Eve murder-suicide have gone door-to-door in their neighborhood seeking donations to pay for their parents’ funeral.
The children, ages 9 to 14, said Monday they had collected about $1,500 to pay for the funeral. However, their plight caused dozens of residents in this heavily Cuban-American suburb of Miami to step forward with other cash donations.
Police said the children’s father, George Alfonso, apparently shot his wife, then himself. The four youngsters said they hoped to remain together, living with their grandmother nearby.
