KTLA Wears the Crown for Rose Parade Viewers : Television: Channel 5 earns a 24.1 rating, easily beating Channel 11’s second-place finish of 8.7.
KTLA-TV Channel 5’s coverage of Saturday’s Tournament of Roses Parade had its greatest dominance over the Los Angeles television market in at least a decade, according to figures released Monday by the A. C. Nielsen Co.
Fifty-three percent of the television audience tuned to the Tribune Broadcasting-owned independent to see the 105th edition of Pasadena’s floral spectacular. Station officials said that was the highest audience share in the 11 years for which it has comparable figures.
KTLA’s 24.1 rating was three-tenths of a point higher than last year, as it easily won the Tournament of Roses Parade ratings race for the 19th consecutive year, attracting 53.5% more viewers than the four other English-language stations carrying the parade. With each rating point in the five-county Los Angeles market being equivalent to 50,064 households, that means about 1.2 million households were tuned to KTLA for the day’s highest-rated program.
KTTV-TV Channel 11, which has tried a number of approaches to try to blunt KTLA’s dominance, was second with an 8.7 rating, two-tenths of a point better than last year.
The three major network owned-and-operated stations, which unlike KTLA and KTTV leave the parade for commercials, continued their tradition of lagging far behind the commercial-free, locally produced telecasts in the parade ratings as KABC-TV Channel 7 had a 2.6, KNBC-TV Channel 4 a 2.4 and KCBS-TV Channel 2 a 1.9.
Both KABC and KNBC ended their parade coverage at 10 a.m., 20 minutes before its conclusion, to go to network telecasts of collegiate football bowl games.
Spanish-language coverage on KMEX-TV Channel 34 drew about 91,960 households, according to a separate Nielsen survey.
