THE TIMES 1993 FALL ALL-COUNTY TEAMS
ALL-COUNTY GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
KIM COLEMAN Setter Corona del Mar, Sr. She’ll attend UCLA as a setter, but Coleman was so invaluable everywhere else, her setting was almost secondary to the team’s State title. Coleman put a promising equestrian career on hold for volleyball, a decision she couldn’t possibly regret.
HILARY KYLE Outside Hitter Laguna Beach, Sr. No one figured Laguna Beach would amount to much with heavy graduation losses, but then, everyone underestimated Kyle’s importance to the team. Her hitting/passing exploits were key to the Artists’ appearance in the State semifinals.
MISTY MAY Outside Hitter Newport Harbor, Jr. Without question, one of the nation’s best. May is noticed most for her hitting abilities, but does everything well. She hits the ball harder as a match progresses, and won’t back down from anything or anyone. She held off two match points in State final.
MELISSA SCHUTZ Middle Blocker Newport Harbor, Jr. Her coach thinks Schutz is the best middle blocker in the state, even outside California boundaries. May gets the bulk of her team’s credit, but Schutz--in no way less important--would likely garner similar attention on a team with a lower profile.
JENNIFER STROFFE Outside Hitter Corona del Mar, Sr. Courted by many, Stroffe’s talents go to UC Santa Barbara. She’s a tenacious hitter--her team-high 27 kills were typical of a consistent season of production--but she digs with the best: her 35 in the State championship tied a State record.
JEANNE VETTER Outside Hitter Dana Hills, Sr. Vetter’s mission was to dismiss the 1992 season and win Dana Hills’ first-ever league championship. The league’s toughest player one-upped herself as the Dolphins won the South Coast League and made it to the State regional semifinals.
THE SECOND TEAM
Kristen Campbell Corona del Mar Setter, Sr. Duke-bound Campbell was surrounded by tons of talent who expected good sets. She delivered.
Nina Foster Mission Viejo Middle Blocker, Sr. Mission Viejo never hit its stride, but Foster was a bright spot for the struggling Diablos.
Stacy Laitsch Los Alamitos Middle Blocker, Jr. Laitsch was solid when Empire League, Division II Southern Section champions went five games.
Kristin Moro Fountain Valley Outside Hitter, Jr. Lanky but power-packed, she led Barons to the Sunset League title, Division II section final.
Courtney Owens Calvary Chapel Outside Hitter, Jr. Despite injury, Owens (244 regular-season kills) guided Eagles to the Division V State final.
Melissa Wendt Huntington Beach Outside Hitter, So. Was a young standout who helped streaky Huntington Beach reach the State tournament.
