In other Southern Section quarterfinals:
La Palma Kennedy 28, Montclair Prep 7--Despite 177 rushing yards in 25 carries by sophomore Akil Anderson, Montclair Prep fell to No. 2-seeded Kennedy at Valley College in a Division VII game. Anderson was starting in place of Wilbert Smith, who sustained a leg injury last week and gained zero yards in two carries against Kennedy.
The defeat ended Montclair Prep’s 23-game winning streak.
Kennedy (11-1) was led by tailback Charlie Marino, who rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns in 20 carries. Marino also caught two passes for 61 yards and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass on an option play.
The performance moved Marino past 1,000 yards rushing this season.
Marino opened the scoring with an eight-yard run in the first quarter, capping a nine-play, 95-yard drive.
Montclair Prep (10-1) answered with an five-play 77-yard scoring drive that was aided by two personal foul penalties against Kennedy. Anderson finished the march with a seven-yard touchdown run.
