PALM SPRINGS — Brethren Christian running backs Keith Washington and Mark Stump combined for four touchdowns and 333 yards in a 27-13 victory over the Cathedral City in a Southern Section Division X playoff game at Palm Springs High Friday.
Brethren Christian (9-2), co-champion of the Olympic League, advances to a semifinal game Saturday against Yucca Valley. Cathedral City, co-champion of the De Anza League, completed its second varsity season 8-4.
Cathedral City led, 7-6, at halftime, but Brethren scored touchdowns all three times it had the ball in the second half.
Brethren ran the ball on all 26 of its second-half snaps, rolling up 215 yards. The Warriors gained 391 yards in the game in 54 carries.
Washington completed a 14-play, 94-yard drive late in the third quarter with a seven-yard touchdown up the middle. Quarterback Reggie Davis dove over the right end for a two-point conversion, giving the Warriors a 14-7 lead.
After stopping Cathedral City on fourth down at the Brethren 14-yard line, the Warriors took the ball and drove 86 yards. Washington finished the drive with a 24-yard run. Dan Harney’s kick put Brethren ahead, 21-7.
Cathedral City failed on another fourth-down try, and Brethren needed only three plays to score again. Stump ran through right tackle for an 18-yard touchdown.
