OUTLOOK

Knight, one of the league’s best players last season, is the only returning starter on one of the least-experienced teams in Hannah’s tenure. The Bulldogs also lack height, so Hannah will rely on pressure defense to produce turnovers and points. As a junior, Knight had team-high averages in scoring (12.5), rebounding (8.2) and steals (1.9). “We’re looking to run--a lot,” Hannah said. “It usually takes some time for an inexperienced group to come together, but we’re hoping we can get there quickly.”

OUTLOOK

Expectations are not high at Hueneme. The Vikings are lacking in many areas. Roblee is new to the area and the league. Jones, the only returning player with varsity experience, played sparingly as a freshman. “I hope to compete as well as possible and surprise a few teams here and there,” Roblee said. “I think a lot of teams will overlook us.”

Lobo said the Yellowjackets will struggle unless their defense can shine. “We don’t have size,” Lobo said, “so our defense is going to have to create things for us.” Lobo is counting on Angeles for leadership and scoring. “I do think we’re going to be a good shooting team,” Lobo said. “Hopefully our defense and shooting will be enough.”

OUTLOOK

The Spartans could be among the league’s best teams. They have good quickness, which should lead to plenty of scores in transition. Carson, DiDomizio and Woodward give Rio Mesa a big edge in experience. “I think we have extremely good depth and quickness,” Wolf said. “We have the potential to be a very good team on offense.”

OUTLOOK

The Cougars suffered a major blow this summer when standout center Anthony McCurtis moved to Kansas for his senior year. McCurtis (6-7)--an All-Ventura County selection by The Times as a junior--figured to be one of the county’s best big men. Despite the loss, Ventura should defend its league title. Larson believes Kern, who averaged 7.3 points last season, will make a big contribution. Last season’s junior varsity was 16-4, so Larson expects many players from that squad to make an impact on the varsity. “It might be a rough December because of how many new players we have, but we should jell around league time,” Larson said.
