Torrance, Bishop Montgomery Advance in Girls’ State Volleyball

Torrance High and Bishop Montgomery will play quarterfinal-round matches at 7 p.m. Saturday in the girls’ state volleyball championships.
Third-seeded Torrance (20-3), the Southern Section Division III champion, will travel to play second-seeded Bakersfield Highland (24-4) in a Division II match. Top-seeded Bishop Montgomery (17-4) will play host to Exeter (31-2) of the Central Section in a Division III match.
Torrance outlasted visiting Huntington Beach in a playoff opener Tuesday night, 15-10, 12-15, 15-8, 1-15, 15-12. Tami Burchard led the Tartars with 18 kills, and Wendy Yokoyama’s serving in the fifth game was instrumental.
Highland advanced in much easier fashion, beating Escondido, 15-3, 15-9, 15-7.
Outside hitter Cindy Weglarz had 19 kills and six blocks to lead Bishop Montgomery to a 15-3, 15-3, 15-8 sweep over visiting University of San Diego. Setter Becci Roehl had 35 assists for the Knights.
Exeter beat Covina South Hills in its opener, 15-12, 13-15, 15-6, 15-5.
