OUTLOOK
After five years on the staff of the Fullerton junior varsity boys’ team, Perez inherits a team with four solid returning starters, including a budding talent in Hoerner. “She can be a dominant player,†Perez said. “She’s young and she has to mature, and once she does and realizes her physical capabilities, she’s going to be an outstanding ballplayer.†Hoerner averaged 16 points and was a first-team all-league selection last season. Perez said his team’s strength is speed, and Darke and Higgins must force opposing offenses into committing mistakes. “All our girls are quick,†Perez said. “I’m depending on Darke and Higgins to do a lot of trapping and harassing in my man-to-man full-court press.†The Indians’ inability to shoot the ball well could be their undoing, and for them to contend, Perez said, their front court needs to be aggressive. “We’ve got to be aggressive, day after day,†he said. “I think after I work hard with them, that’s something we’ll overcome.â€
