NCAA Hits Pitt with Two-Year Probation

Paul Holmgren resigned as coach of the Hartford Whalers and put assistant general manager Pierre McGuire in charge of turning the team around.

Holmgren will concentrate on his duties as the NHL team’s general manager, a role he had assumed in September when former general manager GM Brian Burke left to become commissioner Gary Bettman’s top aide.

College Basketball

The University of Tennessee, an NCAA semifinalist last season, edged Vanderbilt to land the No. 1 spot in the preseason women’s basketball poll by the Associated Press.

The Vols received 34 first-place votes and 1,728 points from a nationwide panel of 71 coaches. USC is , led by under new coach Cheryl Miller, ranked 11th.
