Officials of HomeAid Orange County, an Irvine-based organization that helps build temporary housing for those in need, hopes to raise public awareness about homelessness through a week of activities and fund-raising events.
All week, people can donate clothing at any Orange County Fire Department station and drop off canned foods at the Costco store in Laguna Niguel. The group will hold an auction for nine toy houses at Fashion Island in Newport Beach on Saturday.
The events are part of Homeless Awareness Week.
“We want to increase understanding of the homeless issue in Orange County,” said Bob Albertson, HomeAid president.
A recent survey by the Homeless Issues Task Force found there are 10,000 to 12,000 homeless people in Orange County. The majority of them have been homeless for less than a year and are long-term county residents.
The auction will start at 5 p.m. For more information, call (714) 553-9510.
