Former UC Irvine water polo player Chris Duplanty has been named male athlete of the year by U.S. Water Polo.
Duplanty, a goalkeeper who helped the Anteaters to the NCAA championship in 1989 and was a first-team All-American, became a starter for the U.S. national team this season after six years as the backup.
Duplanty helped the national team to victory in the ’93 Alamo Cup and made two key saves in a game against Germany in the FINA World Cup that allowed the United States to advance to the medal rounds.
