Jim Romero
SCHOOL: L.A. Baptist High
SPORT: Football
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Romero, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound receiver, is being recruited by several Pac-10 schools. He owned every receiving record at L.A. Baptist before the season started, and has broken his single-game and single-season marks and extended all his career records. Romero is averaging 18.9 yards a catch, has caught 59 passes for 1,115 yards and has scored 12 touchdowns.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Romero’s 11 receptions for 176 yards--both school records--were instrumental in the Knights’ 31-18 victory over Alpha League rival Village Christian. Romero scored the Knights’ first two touchdowns on a 17-yard reverse and a 24-yard reception to pace undefeated L.A. Baptist to its first league title in school history. By halftime, he had caught nine passes for 153 yards. The three-year starter is routinely double covered, but Village Christian assigned only one defensive back to Romero, who took full advantage. “That’s the best game I’ve had,” he said. “This is three years I’ve been waiting for (the league title).”
