Disneyland Is Building Indiana Jones Ride

ANAHEIM — Construction has begun on a new Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland that will put visitors in runaway jeeps as they ricochet past smoke, fire, bubbling lava pits and a giant rolling boulder.
The Adventureland ride is due to open in 1995, the theme park said Monday. It is being built behind the popular Jungle Cruise, breaching the original boundaries of the park next to the main entrance gate. A pylon for the monorail has been relocated to make way for the new attraction, park spokesman John McClintock said.
Disneyland will become the third Disney theme park to have a ride based on the Indiana Jones film trilogy in which Harrison Ford played a rogue archeologist. Euro Disneyland has an Indiana Jones et le Temple du Peril roller coaster, and the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park in Orlando, Fla., has a live-action Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular.
The Disneyland effort will mark the first time that the Indiana Jones movies have been turned into an elaborate “dark ride,” which will tell a story as visitors in cars ford a river on a shaky wooden bridge or are startled by a crumbling ceiling.
It also marks another collaboration between Disneyland and Indiana Jones creator George Lucas. The park already has two other Lucas-inspired attractions: the Star Tours motion ride based on the “Star Wars” movies, and Michael Jackson’s 3-D film “Captain Eo.”
