Chemical Spray Is Used to Deter Crowd After Ohio State’s Victory
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A chemical spray was used by authorities to disperse about 5,000 who rushed onto the field after Ohio State’s 24-6 victory over Penn State on Saturday.
Fans trying to tear down the goal posts succeeded only in bending one on the north end of the field, Ohio State security deputy chief Ron Michalec said. One person was treated for the effects of inhaling Mace, authorities said.
Three police officers were injured by fans throwing beer bottles and punches, Michalec said. One person was arrested.
“This is the first time in a long time we’ve had this problem because the team’s not been too successful in recent years,†Michalec said. “We kind of expected this would happen because the team’s been winning.â€
