ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Wins Water Polo Invitational
James Palda scored four goals, and Crosby Grant added three as Corona del Mar defeated Coronado, 11-9, to win the John Felix California State Invitational water polo tournament Saturday at De Anza College in Cupertino.
The Sea Kings (22-3), ranked second in Orange County, scored five fourth-quarter goals to pull away from a 6-6 tie after three quarters. The tournament matched the top eight teams from Northern and Southern California.
This was Corona del Mar’s third championship of the year. The Sea Kings also won the South Orange County and North Orange County tournaments.
In the semifinals:
Corona del Mar 10, Foothill 7--Grant scored four goals, and Doug Jetton made 11 saves to lead Corona del Mar. El Toro, Orange County’s top-ranked team, lost to Coronado in the other semifinal.
In nonleague water polo:
Servite 19, El Dorado 2--Jerry Smith scored five goals to lead visiting Servite (16-7).
