John Walsh passed for a school-record 619 yards, but Utah State beat Brigham Young, 58-56, on Saturday, the Aggies’ first victory over the Cougars since 1982.

Utah State’s Anthony Calvillo passed for five touchdowns and ran for two. Calvillo was 31 of 57 for 472 yards without an interception as Utah State (3-5) dealt Brigham Young (4-4) its fourth consecutive loss. Walsh completed 27 of 44 passes, five for touchdowns. His 619 yards are the sixth most in NCAA history. Ty Detmer had set the Cougar record of 599 against San Diego State in 1991.

The Cougars got within two points on Walsh’s 42-yard pass play to Micah Matsuzaki with 59 seconds to play. But an onside kick was recovered by the Aggies at midfield and Utah State ran out the clock.

Calvillo had touchdown passes of 18 and 19 yards to Aubrey Thompson, 40 yards to Cotie McMahon, three yards to Toney Jenkins and eight yards to Mike Lee. He scored on carries of one yard and two yards.

The Cougars’ Tyler Anderson scored on a 100-yard kickoff return in the third quarter and on a 93-yard pass play from Walsh in the fourth. Teammate Jamal Willis scored three touchdowns, including carries of one and three yards and a 72-yard pass play. Walsh’s other touchdown passes were to Tim Nowatzke and Steve Christensen, for 10 and 63 yards, respectively.

Nathan Morreale’s field goals of 39 and 42 yards gave Utah State a 20-14 lead at halftime. Morreale added a field goal of 47 yards in the second half.
