China Police Seize Underground Christians
HONG KONG — Chinese police arrested 25 underground Protestant churchgoers on suspicion they told foreign reporters that one of their colleagues was beaten to death, Hong Kong-based church sources said Friday.
The Chinese Church Research Center said the arrests in Shaanxi Province, northern China, occurred on about Sept. 1. It said they followed the fatal beating of a churchgoer by police in March.
The report, based on information from a missionary pastor based in Hong Kong who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the 25 were arrested by police angry that news of the beating reached foreign journalists.
