SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It was all pretty simple, J.R. Walz said.

“The offensive line just kicked their butts,†he said.

So did Walz. He rushed for a season-high 228 yards and four touchdowns as Corona del Mar beat Tustin, 35-3, in a Sea View League game Friday night at Tustin High.

Walz scored on runs of 31, 21, 54 and seven yards as the Sea Kings (5-3, 3-2) stayed in the hunt for a playoff berth and eliminated Tustin, which lost its fourth in a row and fifth in the past six games.

Corona del Mar committed two turnovers on its opening drives, but Tustin could manage only a 22-yard field goal by Zack Matthews for a 3-0 lead with 8:24 remaining in the first quarter. And with Walz running wild, Corona del Mar dominated the rest of the way.

“The offensive line played great,†Walz said. “This was sweet because I’d never beaten Tustin.â€

The victory was the Sea Kings’ first over Tustin in four seasons and only the second in six.

Walz’s 31-yard touchdown run with 3:49 remaining in the first quarter gave the Sea Kings a 7-3 lead. He added a 21-yard scoring run late in the second quarter to make it 14-3 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Walz ran for two more scores in the fourth to blow the game open. Running back Brian Hogan added a touchdown late in the game.

Tustin (3-5, 1-4) had a horrible outing, managing just 37 yards in offense and three first downs. Corona del Mar finished with 430 yards, 340 rushing.
