Jeff Meyers rushed for 143 yards in only six carries and scored three touchdowns to lead visiting Garden Grove to a 27-8 victory over winless Santiago Friday night.

Garden Grove (2-5, 2-3 in the Garden Grove League) rushed for a season-high 327 yards and held Santiago to only 89 yards in total offense.

Garden Grove jumped to a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter when Meyers scored his first touchdown, a 16-yard sprint off left tackle.

Meyers scored again 14 seconds into the second quarter, this time running 13 yards to give the Argonauts a 13-0 lead. Meyers set up his own score by running 59 yards to Santiago’s six-yard line.

“Meyers is a key player for us. He is the co-captain and the team seems to rally with him,†Garden Grove Coach Jeff Buenafe said. “He was hurt early in the season, but seems to be finally running into shape and breaking a few loose.â€

Santiago (0-8, 0-5) took advantage of a failed on-side kick and a series of Garden Grove penalties for its only touchdown of the game, a five-yard pass from Christian Cortez to Pablo Martinez. Cortez’s two-point conversion pass to Juan Ramirez narrowed Garden Grove’s lead to 13-8.
