Malibu : City Leases More Offices

The City Council authorized the lease of additional space for the remainder of this year in the office building that has served as city hall, pending the city’s long-awaited move to a nearby building owned by Los Angeles County.

The city had hoped to move into offices formerly occupied by the Sheriff’s Department at 23555 Civic Center Way in early June, but delays have pushed the date to late December.

Assistant City Manager Mark Lorimer said Tuesday that the county Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the lease agreement with the city within the next week or two.

In the meantime, the city is desperately in need of additional space, Lorimer said. “Even for three months, it’ll be a tremendous help to us. (As it is now) we’re adding two new people and we’ve nowhere to put them.â€

The lease of first-floor space at the city’s current location at 23805 Stuart Ranch Road was approved as part of the council’s consent calendar without comment at Monday’s meeting. The 1,900-square-foot space will cost the city $750 a month.

The city houses 16 employees, as well as volunteers and interns, in 2,550 square feet on the second floor. The new, first-floor space, which includes a lobby and six enclosed offices, will be used for the finance and public works departments, some city administrative staff, a conference room and a receptionist.
