The Crescenta Valley water polo team finished fifth in the La Serna tournament last weekend after suffering its first loss of the season against eventual tournament champion Rowland.

Rowland beat fifth-ranked Crescenta Valley, 9-8, with a goal in the last 41 seconds. Rowland went on to defeat top-ranked South Pasadena for the championship.

Crescenta Valley defeated Fountain Valley, 12-4, and San Bernardino, 11-8, for fifth place.

Crescenta Valley opened defense of its Pacific League championship Wednesday against Glendale.

The Crescenta Valley boys’ cross-country team continued to display its strength by winning the Division II title at the Bellarmine-Jefferson Invitational.

Andy Lane finished second overall, covering the 2.9-mile course in 15 minutes 59 seconds.

Sarah Dien of La Canada finished second in the girls’ Division III race in 20:24.3, leading the Spartans to a second-place finish behind St. Paul.

Crescenta Valley’s girls finished third in Division II. Flintridge Prep’s boys finished fifth in Division IV and Glendale’s boys placed seventh in Division I.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Glendale College’s football team plays host to Santa Monica in a homecoming game Saturday afternoon.

Glendale is 1-1 after a 23-16 Western State Conference loss against Valley on Thursday. Santa Monica (0-2) was defeated by Moorpark, 34-21.

Against Valley, Glendale’s Pathon Rucker gained 194 yards in 35 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of one and six yards.

The Vaqueros, however, could not neutralize Valley quarterback Sean Fitzgerald, who completed 18 of 33 passes for 246 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown pass play to Scott Bernier with 17 seconds left.

The Glendale men’s and women’s cross-country teams will compete in the Bakersfield Invitational on Friday.

The Glendale men won their first Western State Conference meet last week, defeating Canyons, 30-105. Nacho Delgado and Luis Jacobo of Glendale finished second and third, respectively, for Glendale.

In the same meet, Auria Roberto of Glendale won the women’s race to help the Vaqueros to a fourth-place finish behind Cuesta, Ventura and Moorpark. Anna Hernandez of Glendale placed fifth.

COLLEGES

The unbeaten Occidental College football team plays host to La Verne on Saturday in its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.

Occidental improved to 2-0 by defeating Trinity (Tex.), 17-13, at San Antonio last week.

Davin Lundquist scored the winning touchdown on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.

La Verne (2-1, 2-0 in conference) defeated Cal Lutheran, 24-10, in an SCIAC game. The Leopards are led by running back Danny Pasquil, who rushed for 209 yards in 32 carries against Cal Lutheran.

The Occidental women’s volleyball team, ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III West region, plays Redlands on Friday in its second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.

The Tigers enter the week 9-4 after playing in the UC San Diego tournament last weekend. Occidental lost to UCSD, then beat Southwestern College (Tex.).

Jennifer Kunz of Occidental was named to the all-tournament team.

Occidental’s cross-country teams will compete in the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.

Occidental’s Becky Kopchick finished second among 183 runners at the Riverside Invitational last week with a time of 17:45 over the 5-K course. Occidental finished third overall and first among Division III schools.

The men’s team finished seventh overall and second in Division III. Terence Flynn finished 24th in 26:53.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Andy Lane, Crescenta Valley--Lane finished second in the Division II boys’ race at the Bellarmine-Jefferson Invitational, leading Crescenta Valley to the team title.

Lane finished the 2.9-mile course in 15 minutes 59 seconds.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Davin Lundquist, Occidental-- Lundquist, a junior quarterback and punter, scored two touchdowns for Occidental in the Tigers’ 17-13 victory over Trinity (Tex.).

Lundquist completed nine of 16 passes for 132 yards. He rushed for 53 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that clinched the victory. Lundquist averaged 44 yards on eight punts.

MISCELLANY

A golf tournament that will benefit the Hemophilia Foundation of Southern California will be staged Oct. 18 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. Information: (800) 371-4123. . . . Tina Michizuki-Karwasky of Glendale won the women’s 35-and-over singles title at the 67th National Public Parks tennis championships.
