Torrential rain flooded trailer parks and submerged a highway under four feet of water Thursday, adding more misery in a state battered by summer flooding.

Storms with strong winds and hail pounded the region from central Missouri to southern Illinois, the National Weather Service reported.

A suburban St. Louis woman drowned, and another woman was killed when her house was swept away.

Up to three inches of rain fell in three hours in parts of Franklin and neighboring Washington counties late Wednesday. As much as four inches of rain had fallen earlier in parts of Franklin County.

“It’s wet,†said Ken Bowles, Emergency Management Agency director in Franklin County, west of St. Louis. “There have been a number of roads in low-lying areas that have been covered up with water.â€

In St. Charles County, one of the counties hit hardest by record flooding earlier this year, flash flooding wiped out roads and bridges in areas that were not affected this summer, said Petra Haws, a spokeswoman for the emergency management agency there.
