Run-of-the-Mill Win for San Pedro : Prep football: For third time in two seasons, the Pirates brush aside Hamilton, 42-8.
San Pedro High set a trap for Hamilton on Wednesday, and, as usual, the Yankees fell into it.
Trap-blocking to perfection, San Pedro cruised to a 42-8 victory behind running backs Jeff Williams and Lindsey Moore, who combined for 229 yards rushing and four touchdowns in a nonleague football game at Daniels Field.
The Pirates (2-0) extended their winning streak to 11 games and posted their third victory over Hamilton (1-1) in two seasons, having beaten the Yankees twice in 1992--26-0 and 39-15--on their way to the City Section 3-A Division title.
Hamilton Coach John Ausbon was disappointed his team failed to do a better job defending the run, especially on trap-block plays.
“I told my kids that they were going to be trapping,†Ausbon said. “That’s what I expected, and they did exactly what I thought. We couldn’t defend it. We were there, but we were missing tackles.â€
Playing a rare Wednesday game because of the Rosh Hashanah holiday, San Pedro overpowered Hamilton on both sides of the ball. The Pirates scored touchdowns on six of their first seven possessions to build a 42-8 lead early in the third quarter, and the defense did not give up a point.
Hamilton, which was held to 74 total yards, scored its only touchdown on a 93-yard kickoff return by Rasheed Phillips late in the second quarter.
Meanwhile, San Pedro’s running game rolled on. Williams, a senior tailback, led all rushers with 116 yards and three TDs in 15 carries. Moore, a 5-foot-7, 190-pound senior fullback, had 113 yards and a TD in nine carries.
San Pedro Coach Mike Walsh said Moore’s emergence as a running threat will prevent defenses from keying on Williams.
“We’re going to give the ball to either one of them,†Walsh said. “That’s one thing we wanted to establish today.â€
San Pedro’s longest touchdown runs came on trap plays to the left side, between tackle Vito Sancirardi (6-foot-2, 270 pounds) and guard Greg Cukrov (6-4, 250). Williams scored on a 48-yard run midway through the second quarter to give the Pirates a 14-0 lead, and Moore had a 27-yard TD run on the same play early in the third quarter to make the score 35-8.
“Up front, they were coming hard and strong,†Ausbon said of San Pedro’s offensive line. “I was concerned about their running game, and they did what they normally do.â€
San Pedro quarterback Chris Pappas completed seven of 18 passes for 110 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown to wide receiver Bryan Castaneda with 26 seconds left in the first half to make the score 28-8. Pappas attempted only one pass in the second half, and it was intercepted. He scored San Pedro’s first touchdown on a one-yard sneak in the first quarter.
The Pirates finished with 328 total yards, 218 rushing.
