HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Crusaders Win Behind Record Kick

Village Christian High amassed 233 yards rushing and kicker Ignacio Brache set a school record in the Crusaders’ 26-7 victory over Bell-Jeff on Thursday night in a nonleague football game at Burroughs.
Brache’s 54-yard field goal in the fourth quarter broke Jeff Pohl’s record of 48 yards set in 1984. Brache also kicked a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Jacob Funk gained 104 yards in 25 carries and scored a touchdown on a four-yard carry to lead the Crusaders’ ground attack. Quarterback Mike Spielman added 82 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown run, in six carries.
Village Christian capped its opening drive with a touchdown late in the first quarter. Funk scored on a four-yard sweep.
Tony Youelf extended the Crusaders’ lead to 16-0 when he returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Brache’s conversion attempt sailed wide left, but he later redeemed himself with the record field goal.
Bell-Jeff’s lone scoring play came in the third quarter when quarterback John Pawlik hit Dan March with a 71-yard touchdown pass.
Linebacker Kris Kehl had one fumble recovery and one interception for the Crusaders.
