Offensive guard Eric Moore of the New York Giants, who pleaded guilty to possessing steroids, avoided prison when a federal judge in Atlanta sentenced him to three years probation. . . . James Orthwein, owner of the New England Patriots, is stepping down as chairman and majority owner of a St. Louis group seeking an NFL franchise and is beginning negotiations to sell the Patriots. . . . Nearly two months after he retired, fullback Kevin Mack reached an agreement with the Cleveland Browns that will return him to the team by the end of the month.
