Marquetry, top-weighted and the probable favorite, will not run in Sunday’s $200,000-added Del Mar Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap.

Trainer Bobby Frankel did not like the 121 pounds assigned to Marquetry, indicating he would run him instead in the $500,000 Meadowlands Cup Oct. 15 in New Jersey. Marquetry was the fourth-place finisher in the Pacific Classic.

In place of Marquetry, Frankel said he will run either Tertian, assigned 114 pounds, or Now Listen, 116. In either case, Kent Desormeaux will be the jockey.

The next high weight, Sir Beaufort at 119, remains an uncertain starter. Trainer Charlie Whittingham said he will make a decision on Sir Beaufort, the Santa Anita Handicap winner, after a workout today.

The probable field includes Sir Beaufort, Fast Cure, Juliannus, Lottery Winner, Now Listen or Tertian, Portoferraio, Region, Siberian Summer, Three Peat and Vying Victory.

Horse Racing Notes

Jockey Kent Desormeaux was cleared by stewards Thursday of not riding out a race aboard Twenty Is Plenty on Sept. 2. He had been fined $200 earlier in the meet for the same infraction. Corey Black was suspended for five racing days, beginning Sunday, for failing to maintain a straight course through the stretch on Czar Of Maui on Wednesday. He will be able to ride Lottery Winner in the Breeders’ Cup Handicap on Sunday. . . . Heart Of Joy has the top weight assignment, 119 pounds, in Saturday’s $100,000 Palomar Handicap for older fillies and mares. Fowda, also assigned 119 pounds, was entered instead in the $60,000 Desert Trial Handicap earlier on Saturday’s card. . . . The entry of Private Persuasion and Canyon Winds is the 2-1 favorite in today’s $50,000 Generous Portion Stakes for Cal-Bred 2-year-old fillies.
