BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Mets’ Bonilla Is Out for the Season

Bobby Bonilla, leading the New York Mets with 34 home runs, has a ruptured ligament in his left shoulder and will be sidelined the rest of the season. Bonilla, who will have arthroscopic surgery on Monday, was injured Tuesday night when he tripped rounding second base against the Houston Astros.

He is expected to be ready for spring training.

The Mets also said shortstop Tim Bogar, who was injured while sliding into home plate Aug. 14, has ligament damage in his left hand. A decision on whether to operate will be made Friday. Josias Manzanillo, injured while pitching against the Astros Wednesday night, has strained ligaments in his right foot. The Mets said his status is day to day.

Nolan Ryan will come off the disabled list and start for the Texas Rangers on Sunday, which has been designated Nolan Ryan Appreciation Day at Arlington Stadium. A ceremony has been scheduled to honor Ryan, baseball’s career strikeout and no-hitter leader, after Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Twins.

Ryan, 46, went on the disabled list for the third time this season on Aug. 21 after he strained a muscle in his rib cage. He has made nine starts this season, his 27th in the major leagues, and is 5-3 with a 4.53 earned-run average.
